The margarita may be one of the world’s most famous cocktails, but despite its popularity, its true origin remains a mystery. Several people and places have claimed to invent it, with stories stretching from bars in northern Mexico to hotels catering to American tourists in the 1930s and 1940s. What isn’t debated is the margarita’s place in modern Mexican culture. By 2026, it’s a staple at celebrations, backyard cookouts, beach vacations, and restaurants across the country.
If you’re used to ordering margaritas in the United States, this version might surprise you. There’s no bottled margarita mix, no simple syrup, and no mountain of sugar trying to hide the tequila. Instead, it’s just 100% agave tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur shaken with ice. It’s crisp, citrusy, and unapologetically tequila-forward.
I’ll be honest, I’ve had my fair share of margaritas over the years, but this one caught me off guard. That first sip definitely lets you know who’s in charge. Then somehow, a few sips later, it all comes together into one incredibly refreshing cocktail that’s dangerously easy to drink. Let’s just say you’ll understand why they’re such a favorite at Mexican celebrations.
